<text>Richard Davies works as a photographer. Since 2002 he has travelled extensively in Northern Russia. In 2011 he published the book '“Wooden Churches: Travelling in the Russian North”. Davies chooses Charles Roden Buxton's words from almost 100 years ago to introduce his book “Russian Types & Scenes”, a companion volume to “Wooden Churches”. Davies continues: “Photographing the churches was exciting and exhilarating but it was also frustrating. My camera was attached to a tripod. I faithfully gave my attention to the tripod and its camera, adjusting the position, the level, the height, the framing, the focus, the shutter speed and the aperture while brushing away snow, rain and mosquitoes from the lens. I knew that if I was to move away for a moment the sun would burst through the clouds; a dog, a cow, a horse or a wonderfully exotic Russian would hove into frame. Meanwhile all around me extraordinary everyday things were happening.”

“I did take some photographs away from the tripod but our schedule was tight and there was little time to loiter - a prerequisite for reportage photography. The majority of the photographs in Russian Types and Scenes have been taken since the publication of Wooden Churches. I've continued to travel to the Russian North with friends, journalists, restorers, students and film makers.”

“On most of these trips I've left my tripod at home or at best kept it deep in my luggage, to be called upon to photograph a church I haven't photographed before. I now travel with a light handheld camera. The schedules have been slightly less demanding, although no less adventurous, but more importantly with less to carry and to take care of, there has been more time and energy to loiter.”

Russian Types was the generic title the St Petersburg photographer William Carrick (1827-78) gave to the photographs he took of tradespeople, peasants, priests and officials in his studio in the mid-nineteenth century and later to the scenes of Russian life taken in the 'field'. This genre became very popular and was taken up my many photographers, artists and postcard publishers well into the 20th century. Richard Davies's exhibition examined and responded to this tradition. </text>

<text>"Lois & Carey" is a photographic series that explores the intimate,
intergenerational relationship between Lois and Carey, a daughter and her
mother, both Jewish artists living in London.
Set entirely within the walls of their home, the project is a nuanced portrait of
familial closeness, personal expression, and the unspoken tensions that shape
lifelong bonds. In capturing the microcosm of one family, it speaks to broader
truths about womanhood, queerness, aging, and the quiet revolutions
that happen within the home.
At its core, the work is about the complex dance between mothers and
daughters - how identity is inherited, resisted, and reinvented.
The tension between queerness and family legacy is treated not as conflict, but
as coexistence - messy, honest, and real.

<text>Homeland is a photobook and exhibition catalogue capturing the outcome of photographer Paulina Korobkiewicz’s 18-month residency at Centrala, realised between West Bromwich and Hyson Green. Exploring themes of political identity, belonging, memory, and representation, this project examines the lives and spaces of migrant communities, especially Polish migrants, in these multicultural towns. Through her photographs, Korobkiewicz documents people and the physical landscapes—buildings, streets, and public spaces—that reflect a fusion of cultural identities, nostalgia, and contemporary life.

Throughout the residency, Korobkiewicz established close relationships with community members, joining local celebrations, and leading dialogues to understand how migrant communities interact within and influence these neighbourhoods. Her work is accompanied by photographic projects from Sylwia Ciszewska-Peciak, Yuxi Hou, Ismail Khokon, and Marcin Forys, members of the Central European Photography Club, with whom she collaborated as a mentor. Together, their work creates a collective portrait of migration, belonging, and visibility.

This artist residency forms part of ‘Post-Socialist Britain?’, a research initiative exploring memory, representation, and political identity among German, Polish, and Ukrainian immigrants in the UK. The project was funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council and developed in collaboration with the University of Birmingham and Nottingham Trent University. Curated by Rafailia Thiraiou, Homeland serves as both a visual archive and an exhibition catalogue.</text>

<text>Painters’ Tools is a paperback photobook that explores the hidden labour of creativity through an intimate study of artists and the tools they use. It is a typological series of close-up images of the objects of making – brushes, chisels, pigments, palettes etc. The work highlights the quiet beauty of everyday materials and the often-overlooked relationship between maker and tool.

Across 200 pages, the book reflects on the intimacy of studio practice, revealing how tools become extensions of the artist’s hand. At the back of the book you will find a small essay about the project by Sarah Larby and portraits to showcase the artists involved in the project. </text>

<text>This body of work is a distinct photographic and text art project, made and inspired from two trips to India in 2017 & 2018 and edited and sequenced over a 5 year period.

Looking For Signs, is an experience of India made through the expressive frame of a hand held camera. The snapshot vision is used as a means of fluid and abstract documentation. This book resembles a travel companion, an almanac of unfolding of time and narrative through the flow of appearances. Over 300 pages, this is a durational and almost encyclopedic narrative experience of India, made through imperfect open-ended visual fragments and encounters with the transience of appearances. Mapping the boundaries and crossovers between the physical and ephemeral, perception and manifestation. In this arena the western self, collides & entangles within the complex dynamics of the cultural, social and historical ecosystems of India. Equally, it explores the universal conventions of photography- its democratic versatility, its technology, its role within capitalism, collective memory, historical remembrance, story telling and desire. Like individual memory, the physical materiality of the medium – its images, technology and craft are subject to disuse, erosion and dissolution.

These are subjective photographs of travel made in the mind.</text>
