<text>After going to protests for many years, I began bringing my camera in 2015 to document these moments of collective action and grassroots organising. For the past ten years I have photographed protests—mainly in London— standing alongside the groups and movements I document. It has been powerful to participate in and document protests that have achieved both small and significant political change. Yet many of the same issues persist, year after year. This ongoing resistance highlights the strength and perseverance of communities standing up for their rights. This is my first attempt at a small publication of these images, in the hope that they can continue to serve as a form of protest and support individuals and groups in educational contexts, libraries, archives, community spaces, and campaigns—or simply be shared as a reminder that we were there: holding a banner, taking action, demanding change. A historical record of powerful moments of protest—a physical copy to keep, share, and reflect upon. The zine was developed with Tamara Rabea through her Road Less Travelled Press, building on years of friendship, collaboration, and a shared commitment to protest photography. The zine has now sold out but a few copies remain for archival and collection purposes. Rooted in solidarity, the proceeds from the 150 copies, once production costs were covered, were donated to Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP), a UK-registered charity providing essential healthcare and emergency relief in Gaza and the West Bank.</text>

<text>The idea was inspired by photos I took of shop-keepers in Varanasi, India years ago. I did more of that on a subsequent trip to Old Delhi under the direction of Martin Parr and when I returned to London, started to photograph shopkeepers closer to my home.

I love seeing a person in their environment, surrounded by the things they sell or make. In the case of many independent stores these things represent their passion and their livelihood. Everything they have was wrapped up in this one little shop.

In 2020 I discovered Camden Passage, a little street close to my home filled with independent shops and market traders. Each one of them has a story to tell. From there it wasn’t long before I turned my camera to the shoppers, the coffee drinks and the passersby.

After four years in the making, this project has come to represent not only this street but in many ways every High Street and community. It’s about the diverse people who shop, eat and drink on our High Streets and the local business owners who offer not just products but a sense of belonging, safeguarding the essence of community. Streets like this matter. They are the beating heart of local communities where people come together to shop, relax, catch up and support one another. They should be treasured, nurtured and supported by us and when necessary by the government. If we lose them to developers and online shopping giants we’ll lose a vital pillar of community life.</text>

The essence of Last Stop is that you might take the same route everyday but what you see, the ebb and flow on the street takes on a random nature, like a series of fleeting mini soap operas. The concertina book format reflects and mimics the flow of a bus journey, but more importantly it gives the viewer the opportunity to create their own journeys by spreading the book out and combining different images together. This moves the book away from an author-led linear narrative to one of multiple possibilities. </text>

<text>On March 23, the evening the lockdown was announced, I was on my exercise round, cycling through an already deserted London. I was experiencing the city like I had never seen it in the 20 years I have been living here.
I decided that taking the camera on my nightly cycling excursions was a safe way to document different parts of the city without endangering myself or others.
I felt compelled to document the lack of crowds in places that are usually buzzing with people. But looking at the images I have made over these weeks, I sense they have taken on a life of their own.
Maybe my photos are less about the lack of human presence, and more about the stillness of a city being allowed a breather to reveal a beauty that may otherwise go unnoticed.</text>
