<text>On March 23, the evening the lockdown was announced, I was on my exercise round, cycling through an already deserted London. I was experiencing the city like I had never seen it in the 20 years I have been living here.
I decided that taking the camera on my nightly cycling excursions was a safe way to document different parts of the city without endangering myself or others.
I felt compelled to document the lack of crowds in places that are usually buzzing with people. But looking at the images I have made over these weeks, I sense they have taken on a life of their own.
Maybe my photos are less about the lack of human presence, and more about the stillness of a city being allowed a breather to reveal a beauty that may otherwise go unnoticed.</text>

These little offices are disappearing from the urban landscape, another victim of the relentless technological progress that defines our age. While they are often shabby and unkempt, they are also, at times, weird and wonderful. Bolted on to the sides of other buildings as an architectural after thought, plonked down in the middle of the pavement on a high street or tacked on to the end of a pre-existing wall, they are a part of the fabric of the city. For how long is anyone’s guess. </text>

<text>Some Fading Thing is a photographic tribute to Soho's famous New Evaristo Club (aka Trisha's).

Once described by the late great Antony Bourdain as the "Dean Martin of drinking establishments", Trisha's - named in honour of its Italian matriarch Trisha Bergonzi - has been serving the great and the good from a basement bar in Greek Street since 1942. Always in Italian hands, and in Trisha's, specifically, for close to three decades, the club is seen by many as one of the last surviving connections to 'Old Soho'.

Photographers and long time Trisha's members Alex Eden-Smith and Matt Davey documented their joint visits to the New Evaristo over a 12 month period, capturing stolen moments of reckless merriment and portraits of the club's staff and eclectic clientele. Shot entirely on 35mm film, Some Fading Thing is intended as a raucous celebration of one of late night London's hidden gems.</text>

<text>The idea was inspired by photos I took of shop-keepers in Varanasi, India years ago. I did more of that on a subsequent trip to Old Delhi under the direction of Martin Parr and when I returned to London, started to photograph shopkeepers closer to my home.

I love seeing a person in their environment, surrounded by the things they sell or make. In the case of many independent stores these things represent their passion and their livelihood. Everything they have was wrapped up in this one little shop.

In 2020 I discovered Camden Passage, a little street close to my home filled with independent shops and market traders. Each one of them has a story to tell. From there it wasn’t long before I turned my camera to the shoppers, the coffee drinks and the passersby.

After four years in the making, this project has come to represent not only this street but in many ways every High Street and community. It’s about the diverse people who shop, eat and drink on our High Streets and the local business owners who offer not just products but a sense of belonging, safeguarding the essence of community. Streets like this matter. They are the beating heart of local communities where people come together to shop, relax, catch up and support one another. They should be treasured, nurtured and supported by us and when necessary by the government. If we lose them to developers and online shopping giants we’ll lose a vital pillar of community life.</text>

<text>A double-sided concertina book, shot through the windows of London’s double decker buses.
The essence of Last Stop is that you might take the same route everyday but what you see, the ebb and flow on the street takes on a random nature, like a series of fleeting mini soap operas. The concertina book format reflects and mimics the flow of a bus journey, but more importantly it gives the viewer the opportunity to create their own journeys by spreading the book out and combining different images together. This moves the book away from an author-led linear narrative to one of multiple possibilities. </text>
