The first deconstruction is of my father’s physical being. He had been diagnosed with prostate cancer and was undergoing rigorous chemotherapy treatments. Whilst dealing with the intensity of these, his arms and hands began freezing. He was a carpenter and he was struggling to hammer, cut and plane. It agitated him. A specialist diagnosed him as having Parkinson’s Disease. A diagnosis he found even more brutal than the cancer. He lost confidence in his work and the freezing episodes put him at risk of losing his driving license. ‘Deconstruction’ in the building trade means to dismantle something so that the individual elements are kept for reuse, rather than discarded. The second deconstruction in the book is my own. My father was my absolute hero. I was in despair. I was in pieces during this period. I sought solace in masochism and excess because I couldn’t face the pain of seeing my father die. I saw death and religious iconography everywhere. The text my father wrote over the course of his death is a third deconstruction. The hospital suggested he kept a medical journal of his day-to-day dealing with illness. It’s him breaking down the experience in forced, painful diaristic accounts of his body shutting down. The last deconstruction is the photography. With each hand printed photographic exposure, with each chance to catch the essence of something that was being pulled away from me, I wanted tangibility and texture. The drapes thrown over the chairs in the living room. His workman’s yard – the metal and the rust. The nuts and bolts of a life falling apart. Around the time leading up to the death was my frenzied expression and plea for help in 2016. I often met people away from home in an enclosed private setting. The world was muddy, and I was nihilistic.The process soothed me as I searched for meaning. It was the first time in my life I had witnessed death. I was in denial for a long time, simply not believing the day would ever come. Then before you know it, the wind is taken from my sails. It was about the early morning when the fatal time came. The ambulance arrived, Dad got rushed into hospital in a frenzied climax in the last moments. I got to say goodbye, hold his hand and be close to him. Grieving is a long slow process and at the very beginning, it is all-encompassing. As you evolve, the aftermath gets easier and I began fixing myself up. Seeking help and letting incredible people into my life. A year later when tidying things away I found a bloody tissue in Dad's dressing gown pocket. I kept it stored away in a 35mm film cassette. It moved with me from home to home. As a way of holding on. I had it photographed forensically in a science lab. I wanted to find him metaphorically in another world. In search of awe. An essence of his existence in an abstract form. I photographed relentlessly, the otherwise tiny tissue came to life with fragments of his DNA magnified quite beautifully under the lens. When Someone is dying and you count down to someone's last breath. To see the colour drain from the face of a loved one, to see the body still and calm after so much wretched pain and suffering, that's powerful. The silence lingers. I can't accept that there isn't something greater out there after death. I parted with my Dad's tissue. I placed it carefully in a whisky bottle and set it out to sea. I wanted to close this chapter on my life and set the memory free. This opportunity has been fully funded by The Photobook Café and Rapid Eye Darkrooms. During their time with us, students will take part in an intensive, multi-strand programme designed to provide practical, professional experience across the breadth of a working cultural organisation. The placement is structured across four core strands, enabling students to develop a broad and practical understanding of working within a cultural organisation. Through research and writing, they engage critically with the photobook collection while producing a substantial written project; through curation and public programming, they gain hands-on experience in exhibition-making, contributing to displays, talks, and artist liaison; through communications and documentation, they build skills in audience engagement across social media, editorial content, and visual documentation; and through facilitation and community engagement, they support and co-deliver zine workshops and participatory sessions. In addition, the programme includes specialist sessions such as an industry shadowing visit to Rapid Eye, offering insight into a leading independent photography space, and a business operations session led by The Photobook Cafe’s Director, introducing the practical and financial realities of running a sustainable cultural venue. Throughout April, a curated selection of photobooks studied by the cohort will be on public display in The Photobook Cafe and Rapid Eye Darkrooms. Each of the ten participating students has selected titles that reflect and support their individual practices and interests in printed matter. These selections are accompanied by a written research thesis, produced in-house as a series of zines, with each publication entering The Photobook Café’s permanent collection for visitors to read and reference. This work is particularly significant in the context of increasing inaccessibility to specialist materials, photobooks are often difficult to access, even within universities where library collections are being reduced. Through the placement, each student spends approximately 70 hours engaging directly with our collection, developing a deeper understanding of how an archive is built and activated, while also bringing attention to underrepresented publications and expanding the breadth of sub-genres within the existing collection. Alongside the physical displays at The Photobook Café and Rapid Eye darkrooms, the exhibitions will also be presented within our online photobook collection. This digital iteration ensures that the featured publications and research can be accessed by audiences worldwide, extending the reach and longevity of the programme beyond the physical space. Each vulva pictured in the collection is covered by either a single petal or flower to simultaneously reflect their shared qualities and individuality in an effort to dismantle the taboos that envelop female genitalia. Colloquial terms for the vagina, including “pussy”, “cunt” and “gash”, have all been adopted as negatives in the English language; being used as insults, curses or as an insinuation of weakness or passivity. In society as we know it, the vagina has for too long been perceived as the lesser sexual organ, conceptualised not on its qualities but what it lacks in comparison to the penis. Even the word vagina itself evokes a squeamishness among many, highlighting the urgent need for a change of perspective. Young children, especially people who are socialised and raised as female, are brought up to name their private parts “flower” and “foo-foo” among other diminutive names. This foundation has created a public misconception of what is considered a “normal” vagina, partially due to typecasting in porn and portrayals in mainstream media, but also the result of cultural censorship. The shape, colour and size of each petal has been chosen by each individual featured to represent how they see their own vagina. The series aims to unify female, non-binary and female-identifying individuals by showing the similarities of their vaginas rather than focusing on what is considered different. Spanning varying ages, races, genders, hair types, sizes and shapes, the series is a captivating and colourful compilation, with each image being accompanied by a message written by the subject about their own feelings about and experiences of their bodies. The book also features a foreword by blogger, author and public speaker Natalie Alexis Lee, who has more than 110,000 followers on Instagram.
