Title A name given to the resource About useless photographs Description An account of the resource "About useless photographs" by Julia Sabiniarz is about embracing imperfections, exploring the value of unsuccessful pictures and giving them a second chance. It opposes the current standards of digital photography and encourages to accept and admire flaws in the world that desires perfection. The idea for this publication was born after years of believing that only high-quality images are worth something. My approach towards photography has changed, and I have begun questioning digital photography and its values after I started using my dad's old analogue camera that is being passed down in my family. One day, I got a roll of very blurry pictures back from a photo lab. Usually, I would move on and forget about the frames I'm not happy with, but this time I kept coming back to these scans. Seeing them together and not among better photos, not comparing them to more successful shots made me fascinated by this collection of useless photos. I have started thinking about the factors that make a particular image worthless, and I pulled out my archive of negatives and searched for other pictures I have never paid attention to because I considered them useless. Gathering them all and looking at them in a different context helped me appreciate them. I have learnt to embrace the poor image, accept the failure and find inspiration in it. The publication consists of a selection of images taken between 2017 and 2020 with analogue cameras. The photographs are accompanied by a short text. This book, is a visual narrative of my experience in a country where the traces of its colonial past are hard to escape. set alongside the photographs, there are excerpts from a 1963 copy of Life Magazine recounting moments from the war. On each page, there is a timeline set between three dates – the date of the Vietnam War, followed by my date of birth, ending with the date of entry into Vietnam. The timeline set alongside 35mm black and white photographs, is meant to emphasise the significance of time. Using black and white 35mm film makes the timeline of the photographs unclear, which points to the nebulous qualities of history itself. FED FROM THE FUTURE also follows the making of the film, and through it a search for a protagonist: a representative of contemporary British youth. Stella meets a boy named Alex aka Houdini, who explains the strong and stoic philosophy he’s adopted to make his dreams a reality. He agrees to co-write a script with Stella and be the face of REVERIE. After many iterations of the script was written, and after two days of shooting Alex walks out of the shoot without saying a word and Stella is left to finish the film. Through interviews, photography and artwork, FED FROM THE FUTURE showcases the 50 young people who finished what Alex started. It uncovers what Alex stood for, and how his final act was testimony to his own self-determination.
