It’s more polite.” the lady behind the underwear stand said to me while I was browsing. It was an early morning a few years ago. I went to the local market with my mum, which is one of my favourite things to do when I am back home in Taichung, Taiwan. Coming from Asia, which is relatively conservative about our bodies compared to Western culture, wearing bras is one of the unspoken social customs to follow otherwise you may be seen as promiscuous because you are exposing your body. The feeling of shame about our bodies of course isn’t limited to my culture. Taking the clothes off is a way of saying it’s time to put aside unrealistic expectations and also to celebrate self awareness of one’s body through movement and feeling comfortable within your own body. “I think it’s time to take the clothes off.” Is what I said to Akti and Xristina, best friends and both dancers, when I photographed them on separate occasions. 20% of profits go to Refuge working for women and children against domestic violence. Voss and Midge Wattles Description An account of the resource IMPRINTS features a series of silver gelatin photographs created in collaboration between artists Ben K. Voss and Midge Wattles. The photographs made by Wattles depict drawings in snow and in sand made by Voss. The series began in the winter of 2018 during a residency outside of Aspen, Colorado, and has continued in the following summers along the shores of Lake Michigan. The imagery suggests a wide range of subjects such as the naturalistic, the other-worldly, the scarring of the body and land, ancient scripts, and maps. Voss’s drawings are made intuitively with his hands, body, and materials he finds on site such as sticks, stones, shells, and water. Wattles approaches the drawings much like an explorer or archaeologist, discovering the drawings in an ever-changing, uncontrollable environment. Using the traditional darkroom process, Wattles prints the work using a variety of tones that obscure the viewer’s perception as she imagines each photograph as a unique terrain. Their collaboration explores the relationship between the inner vision of the drawings and the physical world they inhabit as photographs. The work blurs the lines between expression and documentation, landscape and still life, and the mediums of photography and drawing. A rhythm we become part of once we step onto the concrete streets. The city is composed of strangers and familiar objects: the ubiquitous sidewalk, a slightly bent street pole, a bright orange traffic cone, or a broken-down bicycle left to rust. They all seem trivial and significant at the same time. 'The City is a Choreography' is photographed between 2017 and 2020 in various cities around the world. An exploration that started with the urge to step out of my everyday life in the city. I felt the need to experience the urban environment, with both eyes and body, instead of merely perceiving it. I wanted to figure out how to connect meaningfully with our daily environment and the strangers we pass by. It was the boredom of walking the same route every day, seeing the same objects and the anonymous faces in the crowd, that made me start to see the city as a choreography. When the bright sunlight hits the streets, it seems to set the stage. Have you ever noticed that? The harsh shadows of the lantern are perfectly shaped to follow the lines of your body. The curved sidewalk fits your spine. The stranger and you become one while laying over a street pole. Maybe we are not spectators merely walking along the city, we are part of it. Not passive city dwellers but participants of a street scene. Can we transform the way we interact with the ordinary city and its inhabitants? Can it feel significant? Once a Victorian boating pond frequented by the ladies and gentlemen of Blackheath it has now returned to nature and is populated by ducks, coots, geese and the occasional rat. The pond is a photographic antihero; a place to make pictures I feel are my own. The trees, reeds and other vegetation around the pond provide a varied backdrop from sparse silhouettes in winter, through vivid spring and summer greens to warm autumnal shades. The images in this book are not of the pond and its surroundings; they are of the colours, patterns, textures, shadows and reflections these things create – ultimately, they are just of light. Title A name given to the resource Habitat <span style="text-decoration: underline;">Shelfmark - 276.SP/DOC.MAROHN</span> Creator An entity primarily responsible for making the resource Daleya Marohn Description An account of the resource Habitat is a series of photographs taken between 2016 and 2020. Marohn captured these photographs of homelessness whilst walking through Central London. During 2016 Marohn became acutely aware of an increase in tents outside London Underground Stations. It was then she decided to document the looming epidemic of homelessness. Marohn was drawn to the subject by the stark contrast between the misery of homelessness and the wealth of the city. With their meagre belongings, they invariably made a very distinct ‘habitat’ out of their environment even in the most extreme circumstances. They made out of what little they possessed or could find a kind of identifiable ‘home’. It became routinely obvious that many passers-by were oblivious and lacked care due to desensitisation. The project was approached counter-intuitively. Marohn documented the subject matter by removing all human presence from the frame to avoid an invasion of privacy. This had an effect of heightening a sense of desolation, isolation and destitution. Simultaneously, the eccentric and highly individualised ‘order within disorder’ was brought into sharp relief.
