This opportunity has been fully funded by The Photobook Café and Rapid Eye Darkrooms. During their time with us, students will take part in an intensive, multi-strand programme designed to provide practical, professional experience across the breadth of a working cultural organisation. The placement is structured across four core strands, enabling students to develop a broad and practical understanding of working within a cultural organisation. Through research and writing, they engage critically with the photobook collection while producing a substantial written project; through curation and public programming, they gain hands-on experience in exhibition-making, contributing to displays, talks, and artist liaison; through communications and documentation, they build skills in audience engagement across social media, editorial content, and visual documentation; and through facilitation and community engagement, they support and co-deliver zine workshops and participatory sessions. In addition, the programme includes specialist sessions such as an industry shadowing visit to Rapid Eye, offering insight into a leading independent photography space, and a business operations session led by The Photobook Cafe’s Director, introducing the practical and financial realities of running a sustainable cultural venue. Throughout April, a curated selection of photobooks studied by the cohort will be on public display in The Photobook Cafe and Rapid Eye Darkrooms. Each of the ten participating students has selected titles that reflect and support their individual practices and interests in printed matter. These selections are accompanied by a written research thesis, produced in-house as a series of zines, with each publication entering The Photobook Café’s permanent collection for visitors to read and reference. This work is particularly significant in the context of increasing inaccessibility to specialist materials, photobooks are often difficult to access, even within universities where library collections are being reduced. Through the placement, each student spends approximately 70 hours engaging directly with our collection, developing a deeper understanding of how an archive is built and activated, while also bringing attention to underrepresented publications and expanding the breadth of sub-genres within the existing collection. Alongside the physical displays at The Photobook Café and Rapid Eye darkrooms, the exhibitions will also be presented within our online photobook collection. This digital iteration ensures that the featured publications and research can be accessed by audiences worldwide, extending the reach and longevity of the programme beyond the physical space. The selected photobooks include Open Mic by Ewen Spencer, Bare With Me by Begum Yetis, Everwonderful by Jeano Edwards, The Wedding by Nick Waplington, and Metamorphosis, A Retrieval of Love by Samuel Zhang. Created in 2009, the award has sponsored photojournalism in conflict zones and neglected regions; previous winners include Robin Hammond (featured in our latest Portrait issue) and recent Magnum Photos nominee Newsha Tavakolian. The award was mired in controversy last year, after Tavakolian contended that the foundation’s benefactor, French investment banker Edouard Carmignac began to interfere with with the presentation of her work to an “unacceptable” degree. The foundation disputed her remarks, claiming the postponing of her project was due to purported threats to the photographer’s safety, which it said Tavakolian reported. It would seem any acrimony has abated, however – Tavakolian’s work will be part of the Carmignac Foundation’s upcoming retrospective at Saatchi Gallery, London. It features 40 works produced since the award’s inception by all laureates – Kai Wiedenhöfer, Massimo Berruti, Robin Hammond, David Monteleone, Tavakolian and this year’s winner Christophe Gin. Colonie, Gin’s winning project delved into French Guiana, a region in South America that is officially a region of France, after the invasion and settlement by the French in the 18th century. The area has been associated with gold prospecting since the 19th century, and the booming market led to marked social and economic inequality, compounding fierce divides. The images suggest a tension and a history stretching back centuries that informs the way the various factions and communities in this region interact. We spoke to Gin about his interest in the region and the challenges he faced along the way. Recently, due to the pandemic, it has become a refuge for people from the Northeast. Now more than ever, it is known for having the most vibrant, diverse, and unique melting pot on Earth, especially with its strong Latin influences. It's a wild and unpredictable place - just take a look at the hashtag. When thinking of Miami's imagery, the first things that usually come to mind are beaches, art deco, and party scenes. Despite its many facets, the city's visual marketing is generally limited to this popular aesthetic. I arrived in Miami six years ago with my family after living a pedestrian life in NYC, where my camera, which had served me for photojournalism endeavors, became a tool for navigating the crowded streets. It took time and courage to get used to the hot, sticky, and pedestrian-austere streets of Miami. Eventually, I started taking photos again, mostly during my lunch breaks. Over time, I noticed a visual pattern emerging as my eyes framed solitary pedestrians, post-pandemic newcomers, and residents navigating the city amidst the sweltering concrete. All of this occurred against a backdrop of captivating architectural features and the nostalgia of the colorful neighborhoods "to be gentrified," which were easily overlooked when simply driving by. Hopefully, these images will allow for a more intimate and spontaneous observation of Miamians. If you look closely enough, you might also find humor, vulnerability, human contradiction, and urban revelations. I had picked up a foot injury, which made street photography almost impossible. I still wanted to take pictures. I had the idea of hopping on the bus and pointing my camera out the window. I didn’t have to walk and I had a fleeting yet fabulous view of the City. The 42 bus route passes through one of the busiest bus corridors in Europe. The mile stretch along Oxford Road has a timetabled bus of every 30 seconds .. in both directions. The 40 minute journey was described as ‘chaotic, stressful and unpleasant’ by the Parliamentary Transport committee.. and I couldn‘t agree more.Infacrt, Focussing on the other side of the window is the healthiest thing you can do! The 6 mile stretch between Didsbury and the City Centre connectcs the Suburbs with Universities, Hospitals, The infamous ‘Curry Mile’ in Rusholme as well as Parks and Churches that just about made it into Morrssey lyrics. Title A name given to the resource 490 Miles Creator An entity primarily responsible for making the resource Hans Gindlesberger Description An account of the resource For nine months spanning August 2008 to May 2009, I commuted twice a week between Huntington, WV and Buffalo, NY. This series of photographs makes use of a vernacular hand gesture, common in West Virginia, which serves as an impromptu map of the state. The drawn line that becomes visible in the final two images in the sequence corresponds to the route that was driven between Huntington and Buffalo. With this piece of personal geography mapped on my hand, I visited a palm reader, located along the route, to have the line interpreted, as it existed within the arrangement of my natural palm print.
