For 28 years the Wall was a universal symbol of oppression and division. The 1.3 kilometre East Side Gallery is one of the largest open air galleries in the world and the longest surviving section of the Wall. It contains the work of over a hundred artists. It is visited by millions of people every year. It is a reminder that the desire for freedom, unity and creativity are stronger than tyranny. It has undergone extensive restoration over time. I visited the Gallery in 2016. I saw a small number of volunteers giving their time to painstakingly restore it. I saw a dynamic relationship between people, place and art. I saw care, appreciation, connection and expression. What I saw at East Side Gallery was far more than the sum of its original parts.
