Description
Durham Miners Gala (aka The Big Meeting) is the biggest annual gathering in Britain to celebrate working class culture. A procession of brass bands and trade union banners is followed by a series of rousing speeches by left wing politicians and trade unionists in a field near the centre of Durham. This all provides a context and excuse for a massive communal street party. Rather than merely looking on, this project aims to document and participate in this party atmosphere and to engage positively with a community of which I am a part (I was a trade union organiser for many years). I can claim. According to Jamie MacDonald 'This series of photographs by Francis Fitzgerald presents a unique and insightful view of an enduring working-class culture – it is an honest celebration of community and solidarity".
