shōkakkō
Title
shōkakkō
Description
The term “小確幸 (shōkakkō)” is a Japanese-made Chinese word that comes from Japanese writer Haruki Murakami’s novel Afternoon in the Islets of Langerhands (1986). “Small but certain happiness”—Murakami wrote in his novel, is a life philosophy of finding pleasure in mundanity.
I started this project back in March 2020 when the first lockdown was enforced in London, though at the time I didn't expect it would become a project. All the photos are taken from March~September last year. The process of producing this project is a personal journey to explore the intertwined relationship between gratitude and happiness. The uncertainty of the future is intimidating and frustrating, but I hope the photographs in this book can not only bring a little warmth and comfort, but also encourage thinking and conversation about the way we live our lives.
