Sisters of the Road
Title
Sisters of the Road
Subject
Portraiture
Description
Sisters of the Road documents the remarkable lives of forty female American truckers.
In this collection of experiences, personal stories told in the subjects’ own words are set alongside arresting portraiture and images of the vast and ever-changing landscape they traverse.
Michel’s portraits slot her subjects into the unsung history of female migration across the States. From the Pioneer women of the mid-nineteenth century, crossing the country in search of a better future, to Michel’s own individual subjects, Sisters of the Road highlights the female American traveller as both a historical and continued presence.
Each of Michel’s subjects has her own story, her own reason to keep moving. But together, they tell a story of sisterhood. Sisters of the Road tells a story of resilience, of the bravery in starting over, but overall, it tells a story of freedom.
